Language support throughout the football season

Commercial Language Training work closely with the clubs to provide fully tailored ‘English for Football’ programmes for international players, which combine general English communication skills, football related terminology and work towards the Tier 2 UK English VISA test. This includes:

  • Flexible Weekly sessions at the training ground or player’s homes, or online
  • Bespoke training pitched at the correct level for each individual
  • Hands on preparation and guidance for the Tier 2 UK VISA exam
  • Specific ‘football focused’ vocabulary training, developed with the coaching and management team
  • Personal support from CLT Key Account Manager - liaise with Player Care, prior to and during the course

We have extensive experience in language training for football clubs, having worked with several teams from various leagues including Manchester City FC, West Ham United FC, Brentford FC, Derby County FC, Cardiff City FC, Stoke City FC, Nottingham Forest FC and Bolton Wanderers FC. Our tailored language training courses are developed around the players, using a hands-on approach to ensure each individual learns at their own pace.

Commercial Language Training have now been working with Manchester City Football Club for over 15 years. During that time, many first team players and coaches have improved their English skills to a very high level.

Our tutors are highly qualified to teach at all levels. We also work closely with the Player Support Team to select tutors according to the profile of the delegate – eg ability to speak the native language of the player if required. Our local tutors travel to the club training ground or players’ homes to teach during the season, or can teach remotely via Teams, Zoom etc to fit in with busy schedules. We are flexible and can move lessons to accommodate matches and extra training sessions.

We also arrange general English training for the players’ families at their homes, so they feel more settled in the UK, and foreign language training for coaches and staff at the football clubs. Training can be on a 1-1 basis, or groups of delegates at the same level.

What our clients say

CLT are a standout, friendly and efficient company. They have always listened and understood our requirements and needs. I have worked with Jane, Annie and the team for many years now and they have never failed us in regard to finding us the right language teachers to match our employees. We have many players and staff who come to the UK to work with us with limited English and thanks to this great team behind the scenes and the tutors, they have turned some of our players, with little English, into superstars off the pitch as well as on it. When they do their first interview in English or pass an English test they never thought they would be able to do, the confidence in them once done is great to see and can’t be beaten! CLT are a really solid, reliable company who come with my highest recommendation.

Improving English Communication Skills in UK Football

With two transfer windows taking place in the year, many football clubs are buying new players whose English communication skills need some improvement. When players sign for a club outside their native country, they are immediately faced with a language barrier as they try to deal with media coverage, communications on (and off) the pitch and a new culture. In the short term, clubs provide translation services for players to deal with the media but this often doesn’t extend to communication with teammates and managers.
