The Aim

The aim was to improve English skills in the workplace.

The Ivy logoThe Ivy Collection’s vision was to roll out hospitality-specific English language training to staff in multiple restaurants across the UK.  To improve communication between front and back of house staff and with their managers and guests. Moreover, the training would provide career progression and personal development opportunities. The Ivy Collection restaurants bring the inimitable service and vibrant surroundings for which The Ivy is loved and revered to a select group of upmarket brasseries and neighbourhood cafés. They boast 37 restaurants across the UK and Ireland.

For over 30 years we have built up our network of professional English tutors across the UK. This capability allows us to deliver the UK-wide language training projects of our clients. Also, the wide-ranging experience of our tutors means that we can improve English skills from Beginner level to Advanced across various sectors.

Our method

After discussing the training objectives with the Training and Development team, we were able to start planning 4 pilot courses at their London Head Office. Our face-to-face assessments with delegates allowed us to group them into beginner and intermediate groups for training. Weekly lessons covered hospitality-specific topics such as:

  • Vocabulary – including taking and giving instructions, describing food and drink, using polite language, looking after guests, questions/answers
  • Understanding written communication from the company, signs, communication boards and H&S notices
  • Expressing yourself in 1-2-1 meetings with line managers and explaining problems and concerns
  • Role play exercises

The pilot courses were deemed a success. So, we rolled out English Communication Skills training to 5 sites across England from Brighton to Birmingham.

Course Completion

At the end of each course we assess the level of English of the delegates. In addition, we award certificates in English Communication Skills for Hospitality to those who completed the course.
