Why This Programme Is Different

This programme teaches people how to move an audience.

Drawing on more than two decades of documentary filmmaking, participants learn the storytelling techniques used to engage millions of viewers and apply them directly to the world of business communication.

The result is not simply better presentations—it is more persuasive leadership, stronger executive presence and the confidence to communicate with clarity, authenticity and impact.

Story telling

“Facts tell. Stories persuade.”

The best documentary filmmakers know that audiences make decisions emotionally before they justify them logically. Within seconds they decide whether to keep watching or switch off.

Business audiences are no different.

Whether you are pitching to investors, presenting to clients, or speaking at a conference, your success depends on your ability to engage people from the very first moment and keep them with you until the end.

This unique programme draws on Deborah Lovett’s twenty years of experience directing documentaries for the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, combined with her expertise in executive communication coaching and business presentation skills.

Participants learn the same storytelling principles used in documentary filmmaking to transform facts into compelling narratives, communicate with confidence and deliver presentations that people genuinely remember.

Documentaries take complex subject matter and facts and transform them into clear, engaging, and accurate stories — making documentary storytelling a powerful approach for presentations on any subject.

Authentic Delivery

The most powerful presentations do not come from trying to imitate someone else. They come from speakers who understand their message, connect with their audience and communicate in their own authentic voice.

Audiences are quick to recognise when someone is simply performing. Trust is built when a speaker appears genuine, confident and present.

This programme helps participants develop an authentic delivery style—using voice, pace, body language and storytelling techniques to communicate with clarity, credibility and impact.

The goal is not to create perfect presenters. It is to help people become more natural, engaging and trusted communicators.

Module One

The Power of Storytelling

There are different ways to communicate a message. A traditional presentation often follows a rhetorical structure: each slide leads the audience towards a conclusion, guiding them towards what to think and why your argument is right.

Storytelling works differently.

A great storyteller takes facts, ideas and information and places them within a meaningful structure. They create curiosity, build connection and allow the audience to experience the journey rather than simply receive the conclusion.

Before creating slides, participants discover the central story that lies behind their message.

Powerful stories include complexity. They acknowledge challenges as well as successes, setbacks as well as achievements. By showing both the positive and negative aspects of a situation, stories feel authentic, build trust and make audiences more likely to engage.

The goal is not simply to present information. It is to create a story that people understand, remember and believe.

This module explores:

  • Why audiences listen—or stop listening
Understanding what captures attention, creates connection and keeps people engaged.
  • Rhetoric vs Storytelling
Exploring the difference between presentations that lead audiences towards a conclusion and stories that create curiosity, emotion and understanding.
  • Understanding your audience
Identifying who they are, what matters to them and what you want them to think, feel or do by the end of your presentation.
  • Defining one clear, memorable message
Creating the central “headline” of your presentation—the one idea you want your audience to remember.
  • Finding the human story behind business information
Moving beyond facts and figures to uncover the experiences, challenges and motivations that make a message meaningful.

Module Two

Documentary Story Structure

Every compelling documentary follows a carefully designed narrative. The same principles can transform business presentations.

Participants learn how to structure presentations using dramatic storytelling techniques that create curiosity, maintain attention and lead audiences naturally towards action.

Documentaries take complex subject matter and facts and transform them into clear, engaging, and accurate stories — making documentary storytelling a powerful approach for presentations on any subject.
