As the world’s best pilots tested their skills in the latest Red Bull Air Race contest recently, few people in the UK took greater interest in the flying spectacular than the team here at CLT.
Our eyes, however, were firmly fixed on just one pilot – the only representative from South America on the Red Bull Team - Adilson Kindelmann from Brazil.
Only last year Adilson was in the Peak District studying on a two-week intensive course in conversational English specially-designed for him by CLT and which included honing his media-interview skills. His improved English skills certainly helped him gain that precious place on the team!
The Red Bull Air Race series features the best competition pilots from all over the world and tests their ability to fly with precision and skill at speeds up to 370km per hour on a low-level racetrack made up of air-filled pylons.
Senior managers and engineers from the Vietnamese oil company Vietsovpetro not only improved their English language skills when they spent nine weeks in the Peak on a specially-designed CLT programme, they also introduced our team to the culture of Vietnam.
The 15-strong team from Vung Tau spent each morning having intensive business English training and each afternoon in practical activities and visits where they could put their newly-acquired skills into practice.
“The delegates really enjoyed getting to know the local community and learning about English culture” said CLT Principal Jane Weightman.
Ten Telefónica O2 employees travelled to South America (Ecuador, Argentina, El Salvador and Peru) to spend three weeks teaching in Proniño schools earlier this year, as part of a programme run by the influential telecoms company.
The children currently work long hours in dangerous and unsanitary conditions and have no chance of an education that could help change their lives. Volunteers taught them how to read and write and take part in recreational activities so that the youngsters could rediscover the joys of childhood, regain their self-respect and have a chance of a better long-term future.
CLT were involved in assessing the volunteers’ knowledge of Spanish and then training them in Spanish in preparation for their work in South America.
